“Landscape, Flowers, and Birds Over a Century”
Guangdong painters have established the Lingnan School of painting during the revolutionary movement in the late Qing Dynasty, and it has already developed for more than 120 years until nowadays. The innovative changes attributed to the three generations of Lingnan School Masters have successfully led the Lingnan School to become one of the most influential and representative schools of painting in Chinese Contemporary Art.
The Lingnan School of painting is not referring to the geographical restrictions, but a revolutionary school that innovates painting by “eclecticism between East and West, and bridging the past and the present”. This significant idea remains in Lingnan School of painting from generation to generation. Lingnan School painters believed that the conservative Chinese painters should stop instructing students to imitate masterpiece paintings from the past. Disparate from the other school of painting, Lingnan School is characteristic of innovation and inclusiveness. It depicts a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, bird-and-flower, fishes, insects, and animals. Therefore, the Lingnan School of painting contributed a great deal to the history of Chinese Art.
This activity selects six pictures of the Lingnan School of painting. Thanks must go to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum for lending us precious pictures of bird-and-flower paintings. Thanks must also go to Mr. Ho Wing-cheong, the third generation of the Lingnan school artist, for his generous support and kindly lending his landscape painting pictures.
These pictures could offer a glimpse into the innovative painting techniques of the Lingnan School – “making the best of the Chinese and Western worlds, and bridging the past and the present”, and reveal its significant influence on Chinese Contemporary Art.
