Trough Planting and potted plants (Bonsais) as the main method of planting in Lingnan garden 

  

The most important characteristics of handling flowers

and trees in Lingnan Garden are “trough planting” and

“potted plants”. Using trough planting and placing potted

plants and bonsai miniascape as the method of planting in

Lingnan gardens show the beauty and practicality of artificial cultivation. 

  

There are several reasons for using such planting methods in the Lingnan Gardens. Firstly, most of the Lingnan Gardens are small size compared with other traditional gardens in China, which leads to the space for greening being very limited, the use of trough planting provides flexibility on changing the landscape of the garden by seasons or specific conditions of plants, and to enrich the layer of plant landscaping in the garden. Secondly, another reason for using trough planting as the main method is based on the weather conditions in the Lingnan area. Lingnan is a subtropical monsoon region with a warm climate and abundant rainfall, which is very suitable for the growth of plants. Using trough plants and potted plants, can limit and control the vigorous growth of plants properly, which prevent them from appearing too messy and losing the original intention of plant landscaping in the garden. Also, as the Lingnan area is with abundant rainfall, trough plants and potted plants can help to keep the garden clean and tidy as perennial rain erosion may cause muddy in the garden. 

 

槽栽和盆栽：嶺南庭園的主要種植方式

嶺南庭園培植植物的主要特色在於「槽式種植」及「盆栽」。 以「槽」種植盆栽、盆景植物爲嶺南庭園的主要種植方法，由此展現了人工栽培的美感和實用性。嶺南庭園採用以上栽種的方法，有以下幾個原因。  

 

首先，嶺南庭園與中國其他傳統庭園相比，面積較小，在綠化空間有限的情況下，採用「槽式種植」的方式可靈活改變庭園的景觀，有效使植物的造景層次變得更豐富。其次，基於嶺南地區和暖的天氣，不但氣候溫暖，而且雨量充沛，非常適合植物生長。 利用槽栽種作爲主要方法和盆栽種植，可以適當防止並限制植物過度生長，防止植物外觀變得凌亂，喪失庭園造景的本意。 而且在雨量充沛的情況下，槽栽植物和盆栽有助保持園內的整潔，不然會因爲常年雨水侵蝕引致園內積下泥濘。
