Lingnan Garden’s Music Panel Discussion
Imagining Lingnan Through the Eyes of Young Musicians
Lingnan music is the jewel of Lingnan culture, and same with Lingnan gardens, it was a product of the frequent diplomatic period in the Qing Dynasty. Lingnan music is often performed in Lingnan gardens in order to blend the music into the environment and to provide a unique experience for the audience in Lingnan gardens.
Lingnan music is divided into three major music genres: Cantonese music, Hakka Chinese music and Chaozhou music. These three genres not only embody the essence of traditional Chinese music culture but also have their own unique musical culture due to the influence of different regions and foreign cultures. Cantonese music (also known as Guangdong music) is a blend of traditional culture and western music culture, adding different western elements and musical instruments and applying them to Cantonese opera and Cantonese music.
In this panel discussion, we are honored to have Miss Leung Fei Tong, a young actress of Cantonese opera, and Miss Jessica Fung the founder of the creative research project "Cantonese Music Lab", as our guests. During the panel discussion, they will share their insights on Lingnan music and discuss how the new generation views Cantonese opera and Chinese music culture, Moreover, they will share how to pass on the traditional Cantonese music culture as a new generation musician.
